10th February 2020
National Citizen Service (NCS) visited SGS Berkeley Green UTC on 5th February, to launch their 2020 season.
NCS takes place in the summer holidays, for year 11 students (ie post GCSE’s) with 8 start dates, the first programme starting on 29th June 2020 and every Monday afterwards, with the last wave starting on 10th August 2020. The actual ‘cost’ of £1,500 per place is mostly being covered by the government and as such, the cost to pay per student is £50. This covers food, activities and accommodation while young people are away.
The course is run over 4 weeks. Week one the young people stay away from home at an outdoor activity centre (Monday to Friday.) It’s a chance to meet new people and do amazing activities like rock climbing, canoeing, and abseiling. Week two – is a local residential stay (Monday to Friday) packed with workshops to help young people develop important life skills, along with plenty of time for having fun with new friends. Finally weeks 3/4 (non‑residential, Monday to Friday) are designed to deliver a social action project in their local community, in connection with something they are passionate about.
Here at the UTC we believe this is an amazing opportunity and we will encourage students to take part. NCS is a great way for students to develop their life skills and will help them stand out when applying for university or a job.
