Prime Ministerial Visit

15th March 2024

SGS Berkeley Green UTC was delighted to welcome The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as part of his tour of Gloucestershire yesterday. His visit included a tour of their state-of-the-art facilities, and an opportunity to meet with students who will become the young engineers and digital technologists of the future. The Prime Minister was particularly impressed with the UTC’s, high quality of education, focus on destinations and the championing of young women in STEM.

The Prime Minister, Rushi Sunak said, “It was a pleasure to be in Berkeley visiting a cutting edge UTC where the next generation of our engineers are being trained. From the emerging green skills economy to traditional engineering, the need for STEM subjects is vital. UTC’s are also an important part of the government’s drive for young people to have the best vocational skills possible – something I know Siobhan is very passionate about in her role as a further education ambassador.”

Accompanying the Prime Minister was Siobhan Baillie MP for Stroud who said, “I have talked to the PM a lot about skills and apprenticeship so it was a pleasure to take him to SGS Berkeley Green UTC. He saw for himself how smart and dedicated the students are and what is being achieved alongside businesses. Without the teaching of STEM subjects, particularly mechanical and electrical engineering, our economy both locally and nationally is going to suffer. Some of the work taking place there is award winning and they are a brilliant part of our Stroud district education family. I wanted to show off the area too after our Western Gateway success with the Severn Edge site purchase by Great British Nuclear. Many thanks to the headteacher Gareth Lister and his staff for inviting the PM and myself. The energy from the students was incredible.”

Headteacher Gareth Lister said, “It was wonderful to welcome the Prime Minister to our UTC and show him the incredible work our students do in the fields of digital technologies and engineering. Our students demonstrated their passion for STEM and their ambitions for the future in a mature and professional manner.”

SGS Berkeley Green UTC has one more Open Day 25th April from 17:30-20:00 if you would like to visit the UTC and see why the Prime Minister was so impressed please visit or email
